Maternal and Newborn Working Group held a meeting from 18-19 June 2015, in Kampala, Uganda, to finalise the group’s strategic plan, harmonise existing efforts, and identify opportunities for further collaboration. The meeting which was funded by Save the Children and Children Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) had 37 participants from 15 HDSS in seven countries and faculty from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Save the Children, South Africa.
The meeting was attended by Emmanuel Kwame Darkwa and Ms. Vida Ami Kukula from the Dodowa HDSS. Though there was no presentation by member sites, sites were made to submit data on maternal and newborn health indicators which was put together by the working group secretariat. Each site was made to speak to the data presented during the session. The Dodowa team was tasked to produce a paper on ‘’Actual Birth weight and perceived Birth weight by mothers ’’ since it was the only site collecting data on it. In the end sites agreed to collaborate and work on maternal and newborn health issues especially in the area of cross-site publications.
The meeting which lasted for two days was intensive, thought provoking and very
insightful and will go a long way to help member sites to improve research on
maternal and newborn health there by shaping policy direction in that perspective.
